The New Ulaanbaatar International Airport (UBN), officially named Chinggis Khaan
International Airport, opened in July 2021 and replaced the old Buyant-Ukhaa
Airport (ULN) as Mongolia’s main air gateway. Located about 52 kilometers south
of Ulaanbaatar in Khöshigt Valley, the airport features a modern terminal
designed to handle up to 3 million passengers annually, with future expansion
potential.
Facilities include duty-free shops, restaurants, lounges, car rental desks, and
currency exchange services. The airport serves as the hub for MIAT Mongolian
Airlines, which operates flights to destinations such as Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing,
Frankfurt, and Istanbul, while carriers like
Korean Air,
Asiana Airlines,
Air
China, Turkish Airlines, and
Aeroflot also connect Ulaanbaatar with major cities
in Asia and Europe.
Ground transport options include shuttle buses, long-distance coaches, taxis,
and ride-hailing services, though travel times to the city are relatively long
due to the airport’s distance. A rail link is planned for the future to improve
connectivity.
