Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) is the main international gateway to
Namibia, located about 45 kilometers east of the capital, Windhoek. Named after
Namibian national hero Hosea Kutako, the airport handles the majority of the
country’s international passenger and cargo traffic.
It features a single
passenger terminal with facilities including check-in counters, duty-free
shopping, dining outlets, lounges, currency exchange, and car rental services.
Although modest compared to larger African hubs, recent upgrades have improved
capacity and comfort for travelers.
The airport serves as a hub for FlyNamibia, offering domestic connections, and
is served by international carriers such as
Qatar Airways,
Ethiopian
Airlines, Eurowings Discover,
South African
Airways, and Airlink,
linking Namibia to destinations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Popular
long-haul routes include flights to Frankfurt and Doha, supporting both tourism
and business travel.
Public transportation options are limited, with taxis, shuttle services, and
rental cars being the main choices for the 40–50 minute trip into Windhoek. HKIA
plays a vital role in Namibia’s tourism industry, acting as the main entry point
for visitors heading to attractions such as Etosha National Park, the Namib
Desert, and the Skeleton Coast.
