Italy Transit Visa

A visa is not required to transit through Italy providing that they do not intend to leave the international transit area. In all these cases, you enter the Schengen Area, and, unless you are exempt from short-stay visa requirements, you must apply in advance for an entry and stay visa in order to transit through Italy.

Nationals of some states or territorial entities are required to be in possession of an Italy Transit Visa when arriving at a port of entry in Italy for the purposes of passing through a port (airport, seaport) in order to travel to another state.

The citizens of the following countries are required to obtain visas for transit through Italian airports (Airport Transit Visa – ATV) as per Art. 3, EC Reg. no. 810/2009:

• Afghanistan
• Bangladesh
• Eritrea
• Ethiopia
• Ghana
• Iran
• Iraq
• Democratic Rep. of Congo

• Nigeria
• Pakistan
• Somalia
• Sri Lanka
• Senegal
• Syria

The standardized Schengen visa will be valid for travelling to all the Schengen States. Thus, a special visa for visiting Italy will not be necessary.
