Second Bank of the United States

The Second Bank was incorporated in 1816. Designed by William Strickland, this
building, built between 1819 and 1824, is one of the finest examples of Greek
Revival architecture in the United States.
Today the bank is home a Portrait Gallery. Inside the barrel-vaulted structure,
graceful Ionic columns compliment the portraits of revolutionary heroes and
Federal statesman.
Those painted represent a Who's Who of the 18th century. There are signers of
the Declaration and Constitution in addition to military men and foreign
emissaries.
