Kilauea

Kīlauea is a currently active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, and the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the island of Hawaii.

The volcano became a tourist attraction from the 1840s onwards, and local businessmen such as Benjamin Pitman and George Lycurgus ran a series of hotels at the rim, including Volcano House which is still the only hotel or restaurant located within the borders of the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Getting There

There are several ways to get there, depending on your starting point and the method of transportation you prefer.

If you are traveling from Honolulu or another city on Oahu, you can take a flight to Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii, which is about 30 miles from Kilauea. From there, you can rent a car or take a tour bus to the volcano.

If you are already on the Big Island, you can drive to Kilauea via Highway 11. The drive from Hilo to the park takes about 45 minutes, and the road is well-marked.

Another option is to take a guided tour of Kilauea, which can be arranged through many local tour operators. Some tours offer transportation from your hotel to the park.

Please note that conditions at Kilauea can change quickly, and access to certain areas may be restricted or prohibited due to volcanic activity. Be sure to check the park's website or contact the park rangers for the latest updates before planning your trip.
