Sunset Crater
Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is located in northern Arizona, in the
southwestern United States.
Sunset Crater was named for its brilliantly colored scoria deposits mantling the
cone. Having erupted sometime between 1080 and 1150 AD, it is the youngest of
the more than 550 vents of the vast San Francisco volcanic field.

Getting There
Here are some ways to get there depending on your starting location:
If you are coming from Flagstaff, take US-89 northbound until you reach Sunset
Crater Road. Turn right onto Sunset Crater Road and continue until you reach the
entrance to the national monument.
If you are coming from Phoenix, take I-17 northbound until you reach Flagstaff.
From Flagstaff, take US-89 northbound until you reach Sunset Crater Road. Turn
right onto Sunset Crater Road and continue until you reach the entrance to the
national monument.
If you are coming from Las Vegas, take US-93 southbound until you reach I-40.
Take I-40 eastbound until you reach Exit 201 for Walnut Canyon National
Monument. Follow the signs for US-89 and continue until you reach Sunset Crater
Road. Turn left onto Sunset Crater Road and continue until you reach the
entrance to the national monument.
The nearest airport to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is the
Flagstaff
Pulliam Airport (FLG), which is located about 20 miles southwest of the
national monument.
