Saguaro National Park
Saguaro National Park is located in southern Arizona, in the southwestern United
States. The park was established as Saguaro National Monument on March 1, 1933
and changed to a national park on October 14, 1994. The total area of Saguaro
National Park in 2002 was 143 square miles (370 km2) of which 111 square miles.
The Saguaro, pronounced "suh-wah-roh", (Carnegiea gigantea) is a large,
tree-sized cactus species in the monotypic genus Carnegiea. It is native to the
Sonoran Desert in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.
Saguaro National Park is divided into two sections, lying approximately 20 miles
(32 km) east and 15 miles (24 km) west of the center of the city of Tucson,
Arizona.
The park was established as Saguaro National Monument on March 1, 1933 and
changed to a national park on October 14, 1994.

Getting There
If you are coming from Phoenix, take I-10 eastbound until you reach Tucson. Take
exit 264 for Speedway Boulevard and turn left onto Speedway Boulevard. Follow
Speedway Boulevard until you reach N. Kinney Road, and turn left onto N. Kinney
Road. Follow the road until you reach the entrance to Saguaro National Park.
If you are coming from Tucson, take I-10 westbound until you reach exit 246 for
Cortaro Road. Turn right onto Cortaro Road and continue until you reach N.
Silverbell Road. Turn left onto N. Silverbell Road and continue until you reach
W. Gates Pass Road. Turn right onto W. Gates Pass Road and continue until you
reach N. Kinney Road. Turn left onto N. Kinney Road and continue until you reach
the entrance to Saguaro National Park.
