Pura Besakih
Pura Besakih, known as the 'Mother Temple' of Hinduism in Bali, holds a
significant place on the slopes of Mount Agung. Derived from the Hindu
mythological snake Basuki, the name 'Pura Besakih' signifies its sacredness.
Tourists visiting Pura Besakih can utilize the car park at the entrance and hire
guides from among the locals who offer their services. Negotiating the price in
advance, typically around 10,000 rupiahs, is advisable. While the temple might
not appear impressive on an ordinary day, during its annual temple festival, it
transforms into a marvelously decorated site, drawing tens of thousands of
Hindus from across the island and beyond.
The Odalan Festival, marking Pura Besakih's annual "birthday," is a grand
affair, highlighting the temple's significance as the 'Mother of All Temples' to
Hindus. Additionally, Pura Besakih hosts the prestigious Eka Dasa Rudra
festival, celebrated every hundred years, with the last occurrence in 1979.
Set amidst lush tropical surroundings at the foot of Gunung Agung, Pura Besakih
presents a stunning backdrop, particularly enchanting in the clear morning
light.
For travelers, reaching Bali via air is the most convenient option, with flights
connecting from major cities like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and across
Indonesia to Ngurah Rai International Airport. From there, Pura Besakih is
approximately 70 kilometers away.
