Museum Le Mayeur
The Le Mayeur Museum stands as a tribute to the life and artistry of Adrien-Jean
Le Mayeur de Merpres, a Belgian painter captivated by the allure of Bali's Sanur
shores. This memorial museum preserves his legacy, showcasing his impressive
artworks and personal history.
Le Mayeur's journey to Bali was marked by a profound love for both art and
women, particularly his wife and muse, Ni Pollok, a Legong dancer. Settling in
Bali, he immersed himself in painting, developing his unique impressionistic 'dob'
style characterized by thick, fluent brushstrokes.
Upon Le Mayeur's passing in 1958, his cherished mansion, now the museum, became
a testament to their love story and artistic legacy, bequeathed to the
Indonesian government. The museum's architecture reflects classical Balinese
elements, with sculpted stone walls, carved wood furnishings, and motifs
inspired by wayang shadow puppets.
Visitors to the museum can explore the couple's former living quarters,
including Le Mayeur's studio, study, and Ni Pollok's vanity corner. The museum
houses over eighty artworks, categorized into five collections based on the
mediums Le Mayeur used, offering insight into his artistic evolution and
inspirations.
Situated on Sanur Beachfront, the museum welcomes visitors to experience the
timeless romance of Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok's story, depicted through their
artworks and personal artifacts. Opening hours are from Monday to Friday, 08:00
- 14:00, and the museum can be easily accessed from Ngurah Rai International
Airport in Denpasar, Bali.
