Mount Rinjani
Mount Rinjani, also known as Gunung Rinjani, is an impressive active volcano
located on Lombok Island, Indonesia. Standing at a towering height of 3,726
meters (12,224 feet), it ranks as the third-largest volcano in Indonesia. Its
first recorded eruption dates back to September 1847, with its most recent
eruption occurring on 1 October 2004.
Despite its active status, Mount Rinjani is a breathtaking sight, especially
when it's not erupting. The volcano boasts scenic beauty, including the stunning
Segara Anak Crater Lake, which is partially protected by a national park
established in 1997. The caldera, measuring 6 km by 8.5 km, contains the
picturesque Segara Anak Lake. The eruptions in the 1990s formed a small cone
within the caldera, and lava flows from these eruptions have flowed into the
lake.
Mount Rinjani offers an exceptional trekking experience, often considered one of
the best in Southeast Asia. Hikers can ascend through lush forested highlands,
providing a stark contrast to the highly cultivated lowlands. The fertile soils
of the island support various crops such as rice, soybeans, coffee, tobacco,
cinnamon, and vanilla.
The Senaru Traditional Village, located near the Rinjani Trek Center, serves as
the starting point for many Rinjani treks. Visitors are encouraged to explore
the village with a local guide to gain insights into the villagers' daily lives,
including their traditional thatched houses and gardens filled with fruits and
spices. The Sasak inhabitants of Senaru act as the cultural guardians of Mount
Rinjani and its surrounding forest, preserving its spiritual significance.
For travelers arriving by air, Lombok International Airport in Praya serves as
the main gateway to Lombok Island. From the airport, visitors can arrange
transportation to Senaru or Sembalun, common starting points for trekking Mount
Rinjani. The journey typically takes around 2 to 3 hours by car, allowing
travelers to embark on their adventure to explore the majestic Mount Rinjani and
its captivating surroundings.
