Monkey Forest Sanctuary
The Monkey Forest Sanctuary, also known as the Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana Sacred
Monkey Forest Sanctuary, is a lush tropical haven housing three troops of
long-tailed Balinese Macaques. This verdant sanctuary welcomes visitors from
around the world and offers a unique and enchanting experience.
Located within easy walking distance from the center of Ubud, the Monkey Forest
Sanctuary is adorned with moss-covered stone carvings and is home to
approximately 140 to 200 monkeys, with their numbers steadily increasing each
year. Visitors can purchase tickets at one of the three entrances to explore
this captivating forested area.
While visitors have the option to purchase bananas and peanuts to feed the
monkeys, it is generally advised to avoid feeding them, as they can become
aggressive if they detect food. Some visitors may encounter "monkey-handlers"
offering bunches of bananas to attract the monkeys.
In addition to the monkeys, the sanctuary boasts three ancient temples dating
back to the 14th century. The largest temple, Pura Dalem Agung, is situated at
the highest point of the forest, while the Holy Bathing Temple and Pura
Prajapati, a cremation temple, are also noteworthy attractions within the
sanctuary.
Visitors are encouraged to explore these temples and admire the various statues
and fountains scattered throughout the forest. The Monkey Forest Sanctuary is
open daily from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm.
To reach the Monkey Forest Sanctuary, visitors can walk from Monkey Forest Road,
located in the southern direction of this road. Additionally, the quickest and
most comfortable way to access Bali is by air, with Ngurah Rai International
Airport, located approximately 37 km from Ubud, serving as the main gateway to
the island.
