Echo Beach
Echo Beach, locally known as ‘Pantai Batu Mejan’ after the Balinese Hindu sea
temple on site, is one of Bali’s latest surf spots. Situated in Canggu, it
shares the tranquil, rice field-landscaped region with other popular surfing
locations such as Berawa, Seseh, and Pererenan. Echo Beach is renowned for its
advanced reef breaks, stunning 180-degree ocean views, breathtaking sunsets, and
a variety of seafood cafes perched on high vantage points.
The black-sand beach is located approximately 35 km northwest of Kuta and
Seminyak and about 14 km west of Denpasar, the provincial capital. It is easily
accessible for those staying in luxury villas in Canggu, including The Bali
Dream Villa Resort, Ametis Villa, and the LV8 Resort.
Traveling past the upscale area of Seminyak, the route to Echo Beach takes you
through Canggu’s lush green paddies, which are meticulously maintained by local
Balinese villagers. Echo Beach is at the end of Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan, the
road named after the temple. Signposts along the way guide visitors to the
beach. Upon arrival, you’ll find a Balinese-style gateway leading to the
horizon, flanked by surfboard rental shacks, ding repair services, and
motorcycle parking spots.
To the left of the gate, a paved alley is lined with sunset dining spots such as
Sticky Fingers Osteria Italiana, Sate Bali, Dian Café, and the Echo Beach House,
which gave the beach its nickname. These spots often come alive at sunset with
barbecues and unique boat-shaped buffets. At the far end, you can see the
centuries-old temple. The cafes and the temple are situated on a small cliff
overlooking the surf, and the black-sand beach is accessible via steps to the
right of the gate. A hundred meters along the coastline, Sand Bar offers
parasols and colorful beanbags for relaxing sessions.
Echo Beach is ideal for sunbathing, leisurely strolls, and photography,
especially of the surf and landscapes. However, its waves are best suited for
advanced surfers. The beach is clean and well-maintained, thanks to the joint
efforts of various surf schools and clubs along Canggu’s coast, which conduct
regular beach cleanups. Echo Beach is not only one of the island’s premier surf
spots but also a great place to relax, enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, admire
the views, and savor delicious seafood.
The most convenient way to reach Bali is by air, with flights connecting from
Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and major cities in Indonesia. Ngurah Rai
International Airport (IATA: DPS, ICAO: WADD), also known as Denpasar
International Airport or I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, is situated
13 km south of Denpasar.
Echo Beach is located along Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan in Canggu, accessible via a
60-minute transfer from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban, South Bali.
