Bohorok Orangutan Viewing Centre
Located just outside Bukit Lawang in Gunung Leuser National Park, Sumatra, the
Bohorok Orangutan Viewing Centre is approximately 90 km from Medan. Established
in 1973 by Swiss zoologists Regina Frey and Monica Boerner, this renowned
rehabilitation center aids primates in readjusting to the wild after captivity
or displacement.
Sumatran orangutans are an endangered species, threatened by habitat loss and
poaching. The Bohorok Orangutan Viewing Centre is dedicated to preserving and
saving these rapidly declining animals. Since its inception, with funding from
the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the
center has successfully released nearly 200 orangutans into the wild.
At the Bohorok Orangutan Viewing Centre, visitors can closely observe semi-wild
orangutans as they are trained to return to their natural habitats after being
freed from captivity. In 2002, an additional quarantine center was established
outside Medan to complement the Bohorok Centre.
With the opening of this new facility, named the Bukit Lawang Centre, the
Bohorok Orangutan Viewing Centre has been designated for old and sick orangutans.
The fastest and most convenient way to reach Medan is by air, with flights
connecting from all major cities in Indonesia. Kualanamu International Airport
(IATA: KNO, ICAO: WIMM) serves Medan and is located in Deli Serdang Regency, 26
km east of downtown Medan.
