Batur
Batur offers a captivating view that includes both Mount Batur and Lake Batur.
The area attracts many tourists with its cool daytime temperatures and chilly
nights. Penelokan, which means "the place to look" in Balinese, is located in
Kedisan, Kintamani, and is the most strategic spot to enjoy the natural scenery
of this tourist area.
From Penelokan, you'll be mesmerized by the stunning combination of Mount
Batur's black lava rocks and the crescent-shaped blue Batur Lake within the
caldera, which many consider to be the most beautiful in the world.
There are several restaurants in the Batur area worth trying, many of which
offer views of Mount Batur and Lake Batur as their backdrop. In Penelokan, you
can dine while enjoying the breathtaking panorama.
Since Kintamani is famous for its oranges, you can buy them as souvenirs.
Numerous souvenir shops line the Denpasar-Kintamani road, particularly near
Tampaksiring. Additionally, some tourist sites have shops selling unique
Balinese souvenirs.
Tourist amenities in the Batur region include parking, bistros, restaurants,
lodging, restrooms, and snack stalls. Public transit and ferry transport are
also available. Some recommended hotels include Surya Hotel and Restaurant, Puri
Bening Hayato, Astra Dana Hotel, and Pondok Wisata Baruna.
This area offers numerous activities beyond just enjoying the mountain views
from Penelokan. You can relax in a restaurant, take in the cool air, or visit
Mount Batur and Lake Batur.
Mount Batur is a spectacular active volcano in the Kintamani District, northwest
of Mount Agung. It has erupted several times, with the last eruption in 2000 and
the most devastating one from August 2 to September 21, 1926, which buried the
village of Batur and the Ulun Danu Batur temple in hot lava. The black color of
Mount Batur, visible from a height, comes from the expanse of black rocks on its
surface, giving it a stunning appearance.
Climbing to the peak of Mount Batur takes about three hours, typically with a
local guide. From the top, you can see Mount Agung and Mount Rinjani in the
distance. Besides climbing, you can visit other attractions such as the crater
and the caldera. Other notable places in the Mount Batur area include Kedisan,
Batur village, Penulisan, Toya Bungkah, and Songan. For cultural tourism, visit
Trunyan, where bodies are laid under a tree after elaborate funeral rites rather
than buried or cremated. Despite the presence of remains, there is no odor,
making Trunyan an intriguing destination for the brave.
Lake Batur, the largest lake in Bali, offers a spectacular view and is
crescent-shaped, located in Mount Batur's caldera, which was formed by two major
eruptions. The fertile land around Lake Batur is used for vegetable farming and
tourism, sitting over 1,000 meters above sea level. The lake has a sub-surface
water flow considered "Holy Tirta," which springs up in several places in Bali.
To reach the lake's edge, visitors must descend steep, rocky, and sandy hills to
Kedisan village on the shore. On the western edge of Lake Batur, Toyobungkah is
a source of natural hot springs believed to cure skin diseases. For a more
private experience, visit the Tirta Sanjiwani Hot Spring Complex, where you can
soak and relieve aches, especially after a hike.
The fastest and most convenient way to reach Bali is by air, with flights
connecting from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and major Indonesian cities to
Ngurah Rai International Airport (IATA: DPS, ICAO: WADD), also known as Denpasar
International Airport or I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, located 13 km
south of Denpasar.
